2007/2008: Season 2 for Lego League at St. Peter Cathedral School

2007 Challenge Theme: "POWER PUZZLE"

Alternative Energy Resources - Meeting the Global Demand

How do our personal energy choices to heat our homes, fuel our cars, charge our cell phones, power our computers, or even download music to our iPods impact the environment, economy, and life around the globe? Which resources should we use and why? Explore how energy production and consumption choices affect the planet and our quality of life today, tomorrow, and for future generations. Can FIRST LEGO League teams find the ultimate solution to this global Power Puzzle?

The Robo-Dukes also finished 6th out of 40 during the robot competition. Of the 40 teams their were only 3 from Catholic schools (2 from St. Peter Cathedral School and 1 from St. Boniface).
Our 2nd team the "Solar-Dukes"
started out rough but improved their score throughout the day.

What does it take to expand?

  1. Kids - Interested Student in grades 4-8.

  2. Mentors - Two Adult Mentors per team.   The job of the Mentors is simply to organize the kids.  You do not need to have a science or technology background.  The basic principle of FLL is that "the kids do the work".   There are plenty of resources on-line to help you guide them, and keep them focused on tasks that need to be accomplished.   Here is a link to the coaches handbook.  (Scroll down to coaches handbook.   There is the entire handbook, 27Mb, or individual Chapter downloads)

  3. Funding - New teams need approximately $600.   Returning teams need approx $300.   Numerous options are available here including, CAPE,  having kids pay a nominal fee, fund raising, or getting sponsors.  Most teams at the competitions had numerous sponsors listed on their shirts.
